First, you need General Liability insurance, required by most cities to get a license to operate a food truck. General Liability protects you from third-party lawsuits over bodily injury and property damage to others, and copyright infringement on advertisements. It will also protect you in the event customers fall ill from food poisoning. It pays for the legal expenses and any covered liability judgments or settlements that could otherwise bankrupt your business.

Business Auto insurance is also often mandatory for food truck companies to obtain permits or licenses with the city government. This coverage will pay for many of the costs related to an auto accident, including bodily injury and property damage to a third party as well as damage to your own truck.

You also need Property insurance to cover your workspace, inventory and equipment (oven, broiler grill, fryer, refrigeration, freezer, exhaust hood) in the case of damage due to a fire, theft or vandalism.

Having Workers’ Compensation insurance for your employees should they become injured or ill on the job is a great safety net for businesses. It’s not mandatory in Texas, but we recommend you add this as part of your risk management program.
